CLEVER WAYS TO MAKE A DORM ROOM FEEL LIKE HOME*

Monday 1 May 2017

College can be great for loads of reasons: the people, the partying and, of course, the learning. But there’s one thing about college that really sucks - the dorm rooms. They’re cheap, nasty and pretty generic, and the last thing you want if you’re the type of person who gets homesick. Not to worry, there’s all sorts of things you can do to make your dorm room feel a little more homely. Check this out.

1. Store Your Shoes In Your Bed Skirt
At home, you’ve probably grown up with a closet containing all your shoes. But dorm rooms aren’t exactly known for their generous storage space. You’ve got to make do with what’s on offer, which can be a major headache if you’ve got dozens of pairs of shoes.

A cheap and cheerful solution may be at hand: store your shoes under your bed skirt. This might sound like a faff, but it’s actually really easy. All you need is a bed sheet that goes under your mattress with plastic wallets for all your shoes attached. These wallets can then be zipped up and unzipped as and when you please, and then covered up by your other bed sheets when not in use.

2. Put Up A Paper Mural
No, you’re not allowed to start drilling holes in the wall to put up your favourite pictures from home. But you can put up a paper mural if you like, so long as it’s stuck to the wall by other means. Pick an upbeat shot of something and have it cover up any blank spaces that make you feel lonely.

3. Keep Your Jewellery Organised In A Cube Tray
Another problem with student digs is the fact that there’s never anywhere ready made to put your jewellery. As a result, it’s nice to have somewhere to keep it organised and prevent it from all getting tangled up. One ingenious and remarkably cheap method of doing this is to use an ice cube tray. Ice cube trays are also great at keeping track of all your stationery supplies, like rubbers, paperclips, and thumbtacks.

4. Bring The Outside In
Student digs are supposed to be cheap and cheerful. But often they just feel downright cheap and not very cheerful at all. If your dorm room is looking a little miserable, why not try installing a pot plant in a fabric plant bag from a retailer like Cuckooland. Greenery has an uncanny ability to turn a frown into a smile.

5. Turn Your Metal Waste Paper Basket Into A Bedside Table
In student accommodation, it’s bed, sink, desk, closet and you’re done. But everybody knows that there’s more to a bedroom than the bare essentials, especially if you want that bedroom to feel cosy. Where’s the bedside table, for instance?

One creative idea is to take a metal waste paper basket, turn it upside down and use it as a bedside table for your phone.

The bottom line is that even the blandest of dorm rooms can be transformed with a little thought and effort. So what’s stopping you?
