10 IDEAS FOR AN ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS SUMMER

Tuesday, 12 July 2016

I miss the days where my summer consisted of going to the beach with my friends everyday, meeting the most random people and staying out late and ordering pizza. Summer in your 20s is usually spent working, napping or getting wasted on the rare occasion. We're all guilty of promising that this summer is going to be the best summer ever year after year but then nothing changes, here are some ideas to get you off your butt and start making the most of the hotter months!

1. PLAN A HEALTHY/GUILT FREE PICNIC

If you've got an open green space somewhere in your city or simply have access to a friends garden, then this is the perfect way to spend a late afternoon once the sun has gone down. Instead of packing the usual pork pies, lunchables, areo bubbles and nachos and dip (at least that was my case) get creative and pack some healthy but satisfying snacks. Some of my favourites are greek yoghurt covered blueberries, ants on a log, dark chocolate dipped fruit and blue corn tortilla chips with guacamole or peach salsa!

2. CHANGE UP YOUR NIGHTS OUT

Especially in such a small country like mine (Gibraltar) - most nights consist of heading to the same places night after night because frankly there aren't many other options. Try putting some effort into your pre-gaming whether it be making fun cocktails, have a long list of drinking games ready to play (check out some of my favourites here), or having a fancy dress pub crawl for the hell of it. I actually had a fun idea to do a scavenger hunt pub crawl with a list of dares and challenges to complete throughout the night, but there's simply no time to do it as I'm heading back to London soon.

3. HAVE A STAYCATION

It's true that when we've lived somewhere for most of our lives we usually neglect visiting places closer to home. Plan a day to live like a tourist in your own country and visit restaurants/cafes/attractions you're always saying you're planning on going to but never do. In my case I'm 21 and still haven't experienced Lower St Michael's Cave. If you're having friends coming to visit go all out and book an apartment in Ocean Village (if your bank account can stretch that far) and make the most of that 24hr pool & jacuzzi.

4. THROW A GOOD OLD FASHION SLEEPOVER

My friend Jesse had a "adult sleep over" for her 22nd Birthday and it was so much fun! She went all out and had homemade face masks, drinking games, cocktails, cake pops and karaoke all set up for the evening - not to mention a yummy full english breakfast lined up for the morning to cure that hangover. If you're feeling lazy just order some pizza, buy a couple of bottles of wine and have a movie menu for your friends to choose from - then spend the rest of the night reminiscing what you got up to when you were 15 and then another hour on Chat Roulette.

5. TAKE A TRIP UP THE COAST

Spontaneous trips are always the best aren't they? There are lots of great last minute deals for hotels up the coast or a ferry ride away to Morocco. Try stay away from the overrated towns like Marbella and Benalmadena or wherever the "go to" party place is in your area and do a search on Pinterest for things other towns close to you offer. I haven't been to Seville in ages and I'm planning on going with a few of my fellow GOT fans to take a tour of the Game of Thrones filming locations for sites such as Dawne.

6. THROW A POTLUCK DINNER PARTY

I think I'm using the right term...if not it basically means a dinner party where everyone brings their own dish. Maybe someone in your friendship group can hold one weekly and focus on a different theme or cuisine. You could always opt for a cheese and wine night instead or a cocktail making night if you fancy something a bit more...alcoholic. Just make sure to agree on who's bringing what first so you don't end up with 5 lasagnas and nothing to drink.

7. MAKE EXERCISING FUN

The early and late hours of summer are the best for walks and workouts on the beach. Exercising outdoors is so much more enjoyable and calming and the sand gives your workout that extra push too. Me and a friend of mine used to jog to the beach at 8am, workout, go swimming and then spend the rest of the day sun-bathing - this also meant we got the best spot on the beach. If that doesn't sound ideal to you, just swim! You work so many muscles just swimming about and it doesn't even feel like it. If you reaaally want to make your swim that much more fun, purchase one of those adult mermaid tails and work on those abs girl.

8. NETFLIX (PIZZA) & CHILL

Summer is great for doing f-all and not feeling guilty about it, sometimes even going to the beach is too much effort. So have a day to just enjoy watching movies, chilling by yourself or with anyone else and order pizza with all the toppings without feeling disappointed in yourself. If you're seeing someone or in a relationship, then this means you also get the luxury of free massages, probably not picking up the bill and erm, other activities.

9. MAKE NEW FRIENDS!!

Everyone is always in a better mood in the summer months, unless you're waking up at 8am to work everyday and hate the heat. A lot of people are also on holiday and will be visiting your town looking for a good time and some laughs. Lose your inhibitions and just talk to people! Chances are you'll end up having a spontaneous night to remember and will end up making a few friends which means more likes on your Instagram selfie.

10. GO ON A LONG WALK ACROSS YOUR CITY TO FIND POKEMON

If all else fails, join in on the hype - get yourself an American apple ID and go hunt down Pikachu at 2am when you can't sleep and feel like getting some fresh air. This could also be a great idea for a first date if your date is also a super loser like you.
