BEING YOUR OWN VALENTINE THIS VALENTINE'S DAY.

Sunday, 11 February 2018

There are two things that excite me most when I think about Valentine's Day, the reduced chocolates in Morrisons and the release of Fifty Shades Freed. I've been single for quite some time now, and even when I wasn't I was still solo when February 14th came around. However that doesn't mean I've been spending the occasion crying in the bath listening to Celine Dion. Technically St Valentine's Day is the 'feast day of Saint Valentine; the celebration of love and affection' so why should this only be extended to your S/O? Instead of writing a post about why Valentine's Day sucks, because let's face it why wouldn't you enjoy a day dedicated to flowers, chocolate and a 3 course meal? I thought I'd write a little something about why it's also important to look out for numbero uno. As the fabulous Ru Paul once said, If you don't love yourself, how in the hell you gonna love somebody else?

Don't be bitter.

First things first, don't let all the couples and Instagram posts flooded with guylian chocolate and Asda roses get you down. Being single is awesome, assuming you are in your 20s, you still have your whole life to find a significant other and settle down. Despite your whole family asking you when you're going to find someone and settle down, now is the time to 'find yourself', do the things you want to do, travel and have holiday romances and watch all the Netflix shows you want that your partner probably wouldn't be in to. Your time will come, so embrace your independence.

Fill your day with things you love.

Even though I'm content being single, I am a bit of a hopeless romantic and I blame The Notebook and The Great Gatsby for that. I don't really watch romantic movies unless it's a must see in the cinema, as I'm just more of a thriller or comedy kinda gal. Although some of my favourite films are about love, but not necessarily love stories (500 Days of Summer). That will take up 2 hours of my day, and the rest will be spent eating pizza, cheesy garlic bread and panna cotta because those are the things I love most.

Show love to others.

I remember being 10 and being really sad that I never received any Valentine's cards apart from the 'anonymous' one I got every year from my parents. There might be people around you who actually feel really low and alone on Valentine's Day - if you've got someone in your life who's recently gone through a break up, suggest having a night in together. Buy your mum flowers, or your younger sibling a box of chocolates - a little surprise gesture goes a long way.

Treat yourself.

I remember 3 years ago I was in Victoria's Secret in Florida and I had bought myself some lingerie and the woman at the counter was like "isn't your boyfriend lucky" to which I nicely replied that in fact the only person who was going to be seeing this was me in the mirror. After seeing all the Valentine's promotions in the mall I thought, I might as well take advantage of these offers and treat myself. Last year I treated myself to a bunch of Lush products, and this year First Class Watches treated me to this Daniel Wellington Petite Melrose* gift set. Not only do they have a wide collection of watches for men and women, but they also arrive within a week and offer free watch adjustments. It took me a while to figure out how to adjust my strap (thanks Youtube) but it looks gorgeous and dainty. The bracelet is a nice elegant touch and seeing as I don't like wearing a lot on my wrists this is the perfect accessory.

Celebrate it anyway!

This Valentine's Day me and my friends are going to Pizza Express for a 3 course meal, to honour our love for pizza. Sure, the waiter might be a bit confused that there's 3 of us at a table amongst couples but who cares? If you want to go out to eat because it's an excuse to do so then do it, or there's always take away and a movie. There's still going to be a divide on social media with those celebrating it and those not partaking in it but if you can't beat em, you might as well join em!

Whether you're single or in a relationship, put on some 'Fairytale Disney' songs in the morning, put on your rosiest lipstick and spend the day with a smile on your face. How will you be spending Valentine's Day this year?
